Fire and evacuation alarms are intended to alert building occupants that a fire or other life-threatening situation exists. Upon hearing the alarm, everyone should leave the building immediately. In the event of a fire, the following steps should be taken to ensure the safety of all building occupants:
- Activate the nearest fire alarm.
- Call 911 immediately and provide information about your location and where the fire is located.
- If there is smoke in the area, stay as low as possible while exiting.
- Be sure to check closed doors for heat before opening.
- Do not stop to collect personal belongings.
- Exit the building following emergency maps which are posted throughout the building.
- Assist physically impaired or injured personnel if possible, to a secure area and notify emergency responders.
- Do not use the elevators.
- Report hazardous conditions.
- Ensure all personnel are out of the building.
- Assemble personnel at a remote location noted on evacuation maps.
- Stay away from the building until notified that it is safe to return.
Use a fire extinguisher only if safe to do so and you have been trained. If the fire appears no larger than a trash can, and you feel confident that you can put the fire out then use a fire extinguisher. If the fire becomes bigger, evacuate the building immediately.
